Loud bang from the garage
With the door shut, a bang is most often the torsion spring above the door snapping. Next come a side spring, a lift cable and a roller jumping its track.
What to do right now
- Step 1 Don’t press the opener button again, and leave the door where it is.
- Step 2 Look up from the floor. A gap in the spring over the door means it broke.
-
Step 3 Check each bottom corner for a cable hanging loose. Look, don’t touch. - Step 4 If the door was open when it banged, keep everyone out from under it.
Likely causes
- Snapped torsion spring The coil above the door has a gap, and the opener can’t lift the door. from$249
- Broken side spring On doors with springs beside the tracks, one now hangs in two pieces. from$249
- Snapped lift cable A cable hangs loose at a bottom corner, and that side sits low. from$219
- Roller out of its track The bang came while the door moved, and now it sits crooked. from$219
You’ll know the exact price at the door, before work begins.

Common questions
What was that loud bang in my garage?
Most likely the torsion spring on the bar above your garage door. It’s wound tight, and when it snaps it can sound like a gunshot or something heavy falling. Look from the floor for a gap in the coil. If you see one, leave the door closed and call us.
Can I get my car out after a spring breaks?
Not through the garage door. The spring was doing the lifting, so the door is now dead weight that can come down hard. Leave it closed and find another ride for now. When the spring you need is on the truck, it’s replaced on the same visit.
